Veljum betri fararmáta til vinnu

University-of-Edinburgh-s-001Í febrúar verður þriggja vikna vinnustaðakeppni í Edinborg þar sem keppt verður um að megna sem minnst með því að velja betri fararmáta til vinnunnar. Fólk er ekki bara hvatt til að hjóla til vinnu heldur má líka ganga, nota almenningsvagna eða deila bílnum með öðrum.

Kíkið á frétt Guardian um keppnina og kíkið á heimasíðu keppninnar A Better Way To Work Challenge.

Who has the lowest carbon footprint in Edinburgh?

A lot of local travel initiatives involve cycling promotion, but not everybody is able to ride a bike. A new challenge set by The Bike Station hopes to find the workforce in the city that travels smartest - not just on bikes.

By setting up a league table of employers, the Causewayside charity hopes employees will log all their journeys throughout February.

By pitting local workforces against each other, the challenge aims to help locals save money, help the environment and become fitter. There are also prizes including a hot air balloon ride, two annual Lothian Bus passes, a bike worth £650 and lunch for two at the Witchery. There are other team prizes on offer too.

The Bike Station, who are on Twitter here, told us:

"While the last two challenges focused on cycling, the A better way to work Challenge is open to cyclists and non-cyclists alike. Over the three weeks, the challenge will be on to see which company or team can encourage as many members of staff as possible to travel to work sustainably.

"Anyone who travels to work by bike, on foot, by bus or by car-share can log their trips, and be in with a chance of winning some great team and individual prizes, from hot air ballooning, spa days, wine tasting and much more.

"The challenge is based on participation (not miles), so you need to encourage as many of your colleagues as possible to take part to win, whether they drive to work or not."

Once signed up employers are entered into league tables, split by number of employees. Departments can have their own groups and individuals can create their own personal profiles, a bit like Facebook. Every journey can be logged on their profile.
